Hachirogata Lagoon before Reclamation
In autumn, you could see Utase fishing boats using the wind to fill their sails while dragging nets.
This became a seasonal sight, symbolic of Hachirogata Lagoon. The main fish species caught were shirauo (whitebait).
Because Hachirogata Lagoon is a shallow lake, the Utase fishing method, which uses sails, was one of the techniques particularly suited to the area’s topography.
