Reclamation Procedures

The key points in reclamation of Lake Hachirogata were to build a dike, drain the water, and desalinate the water.
A 52 km long dike, a pumping station that can drain up to 80 tons of water per second, and a tide gate that prevents seawater from entering.
These are the symbols that protect Ogata Village.

How to build a levee

The bottom of Lake Hachirogata was soft, so measures were taken to ensure that the embankments would not sink.
In areas where the lake bottom soil was deep, the surface of the lake bottom soil was dug up, sand was laid on top of it, and embankments were constructed.
The width of the embankment was set to a maximum of 200 metres.

  1. Remove the lake bottom soil.
  2.  In the area where the lake bottom soil was removed, sand with good soil foundation is added and piled up.
  3.  Dig a hole to store the sand you brought.
  4.  Preparation for embankment filling.
  5.  The embankment is piled up. Rubble is placed at the boundary between the embankment and the water surface to reinforce it.
  6.  Adjusting the shape of the pile.
  7.  Protecting the embankment slope.
