Yujiro OBATA

Yujiro Obata was born in 1906 in the village of Hayaguchi (now Odate City), Akita Prefecture.
In 1931,he began his service in Akita Prefecture, where he held various positions including Director of the Department of Civil Affairs and Director of the General Affairs Department.
In 1955, he was elected Governor of Akita Prefecture, serving for six terms and a total of 24 years in office.
During his tenure, he made significant contributions to the development of the prefecture through his efforts in fiscal reconstruction, promoting agriculture, building new industrial cities, and advancing lifelong education.
One of his most notable achievements was his work on the reclamation of Lake Hachiro, which began as an initiative to prevent flooding along the lake’s coastline.
He dedicated much of his political project, career to this project, overcoming significant challenges, such as securing approval for the project, obtaining budget allocations, and addressing compensation for the fishing industry.
His outstanding political skills and unwavering determination led to the successful completion of the reclamation project and the construction of a new rural community. His contributi ons were instrumental in the development of the region.
Yujiro Obata passed away in 1982.
